Welcome from Chris Cuffe
The Australian sharemarket presents a dilemma for most investors. Four of the five largest stocks are banks, comprising an amazing 27% of the entire S&P/ASX200 index. Investors want to buy banks for yield, but everyone knows bank prices have already run up strongly. Over half the market's gain in 2013 is due to the banks. Is a correction due? Add in Telstra and BHP and there is 40% of the market in only six stocks, so even an index fund does not have much diversification. Roger Montgomery does not believe we are in bubble territory yet, although he sees early signs of concern and he is not saying prices cannot fall from here.
At the other end of the market, the small stocks, many have also rallied strongly but these companies are less researched and it is still possible to find little-known gems. Chris Stott gives his Top 10 tips for identifying the best small to medium companies.
Ashley Owen takes a look at the characteristics of a country that was once considered an emerging market economy, but is now part of the developed world. It’s worth all investors considering how the world is changing, and whether opportunities are likely to appear in the next block of emerging countries.
Official statistics can be misleading. The current unemployment rate is a low 5.7%, so it must be easy to get a job. Economic growth remains strong, so small businesses must be doing well. Baby boomers are retiring after 20 years of compulsory super, so they’re all self-funded. Rick Cosier meets many clients who have vastly different personal experiences to these perceptions, and an important part of any financial plan is to cover unexpected and unwelcome events.
Last week, we had many readers respond to this article on index versus active investing, and so we reprise the subject with some of their feedback.
