Choose the ‘equity escalator’ not the ‘equity rollercoaster’

‘Winning by not losing’ is just as important in the world of investment as it is in sport.

By quantifying the percentage gain or loss, on average, an investment portfolio experiences in a falling or rising market, investors can gain a valuable insight into how the portfolio might perform relative to an index over the long term. Is it better to outperform in in a rising market, or protect portfolios from falling markets?
